About the Opportunity

Nova Scotia Health (NSH) is seeking an experienced and visionary Director of Security to lead the continuous development, implementation, and oversight of comprehensive security strategies across all healthcare facilities within Nova Scotia Health. Reporting to the VP of Corporate Service, this leadership role will provide transformational and strategic direction to safeguard NSH’s people, patients, assets, and reputation while ensuring a secure and welcoming environment.

The Director of Security will act as a key advisor and subject matter expert on security matters, working collaboratively with executive leadership, clinical teams, external stakeholders, and government partners to maintain the highest standards of safety and security within the healthcare sector.

Key Responsibilities

The Director of Security will be responsible for developing and executing a province-wide security strategy that aligns with NSH’s mission, vision, and values. This involves leading the development of security policies and best practices to address current and emerging threats, ensuring compliance with national and provincial regulations, and fostering a security-conscious culture. They will provide strategic oversight for facility security operations across all healthcare sites, leading a team of security professionals to ensure 24/7 coverage and response. The role also includes monitoring key performance indicators and conducting risk assessments to implement mitigation strategies.

Incident management is a critical aspect of the role, where the Director will oversee security response plans, lead investigations into security breaches, and coordinate with law enforcement during emergencies. The Director will collaborate with clinical, administrative, and operational leaders to address security needs and serve as the primary point of contact for security-related matters with external partners and provincial government agencies. They will also lead regular communication and training initiatives to educate staff on security protocols.

The Director will identify and implement advanced security technologies, staying abreast of emerging innovations to enhance operational effectiveness. Budget and resource management are essential, including developing the security services budget, negotiating contracts with third-party vendors, and finding opportunities for cost-saving initiatives while maintaining high-quality services.

About You

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in security management, criminal justice, business administration, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Protection Professional (CPP), Physical Security Professional (PSP), or equivalent are highly desirable.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive security leadership experience, preferably within healthcare or a similarly complex, multi-site environment.
  • Proven track record in strategic planning, program development, and transformational leadership.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of security technologies, risk management frameworks, and industry best practices.
  • Strong understanding of provincial and national healthcare security regulations and standards.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders, including executive leaders, clinical staff, government agencies, and law enforcement.
  • High level of discretion, integrity, and decision-making ability.

Working Conditions

Compensation and Benefits

$53.9102 - 67.3876 hourly ($105,120 - $131,405 annually)
