About the Opportunity


The Renal Transplant Associate Physician is a licensed (Associate Physician) physician employed by the Nova Scotia Health Authority to provide clinical care under the supervision of a fully licensed physician. This position is assigned to the Renal Transplant Program and provides medical care under direct supervision of the Associate Physician Program Director for the Renal Transplant Program and indirectly to the Executive Medical Director through the Central Zone Director, Medical Affairs. Participation in the call schedule may be required. 

 

Clinical Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Associate Physician Program Director

Inpatient and outpatient care:

  • Functions as a member of the team in the Nephrology/Renal Transplant Service at the level of a PGY1 or PGY2. Makes regular rounds under the supervising nephrologist staff.
  • Day-to-day management of inpatients admitted to the Renal Transplant Service on 6B at the VGH Site. This will include admission of patients (history and physical) for urgent transplant surgeries, urgent admissions on direct hospital transfers or other emergency or elective admissions from outpatient clinics or ER settings.
  • Liaises with nurses, house staff, attending staff and other members of the allied health care team, (pharmacists, dieticians, social workers, and physiotherapists) in the assessment, development and implementation of the overall patient care plan.
  • Interacts collaboratively with and orientates rotating residents (General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Urology) and fellows (Transplant Nephrology, Surgery), new to the Kidney Transplant Service.
  • Communicates with patients, families, referring, and family physicians concerning patient management plans. Participating in discharge planning with the patient, patient’s family and healthcare team. 
  • The Associate Physician is responsible for completion of standing orders, daily assessments and examinations, review of the patients’ laboratory and radiologic investigations and renal biopsies, removal of central venous catheters.  Regular daily progress notes will be written and discharge summaries including interim reports will be completed in a timely manner. 
  • Performs procedures within the scope of his/her demonstrated competence and privileges and according to established policies or protocols.
  • Arranges consultations with other departments for care and investigation.
  • Follows through on investigations and arranges follow-up outpatient visits.
  • The Associate Physician will attend out-patient Renal Transplant Clinics and respond to clinic daily to aid in the monitoring and routine and urgent care for patients.
  • The Associate Physician will be involved in the renal transplant chart assessments and presentations at the weekly Renal Wait List Meeting.
  • Participates in on-call responsibilities of the service for weekends as required.

  • Must meet the requirements to obtain a Clinical Assistant License from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (https://cpsns.ns.ca/resource/clinical-assistant-licence)
  • Must have obtained (in writing) Review of Qualifications from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia prior to application deadline. Please upload this with your application
  • CMPA coverage required 
  • ACLS certification required
  • Good command of written and spoken English
  • Must be able to promote and maintain good interpersonal skills
  • Completion of the equivalence of a rotating internship and postgraduate training and experience in Family Medicine are consider assets
  • Physical demand - Must be able to sit, stand, walk and perform duties as outlined above
  • Mental and Visual demand – High; must be able to deal with stressful situations 
  • Competencies in other languages an asset; French preferred

Hours

  • Permanent, Full-Time Position, 96 hrs bi-weekly

Compensation and Incentives

$49.91 - $63.57 Hourly
