About the Opportunity
The Coronary Care/Intermediate Care Unit is a 30 bed dynamic unit. This includes 6.4 CCU (12 beds) beds and 6.1 IMCU (18 beds).
The population includes cardiac patients such as acute myocardial infarction, post cardiac arrest, cardiogenic shock, acute congestive heart failure and patients with complications following cardiac catheterization. Registered Nurses are assigned individual patients according to their level of expertise, skills, the acuity of the patient illness and workload. Total patient care is the nursing care delivery system. Heart Health Coronary Care Unit/Intermediate Care Unit is the tertiary referral center for Nova Scotia and PEI.
Reporting to and in collaboration with the Health Services Manager, the Assistant Manager participates in the planning and provision of care and identifies issues that have potential or actual impact on patient care. The Assistant Manager keeps the Health Services Manager aware and up-to-date on any significant events. The Assistant Manager plans, co-ordinates and participates in the care of patients within the units and hospital. The Assistant Manager acts as a role model and patient care advocate and exhibits team building and leadership skills. The Assistant Manager demonstrates effective communication and organizational skills and acts as a resource for all team members and ensures quality care is provided in a family centered manner.
In addition to the day-to-day operations, the Assistant Manager, in collaboration with the Manager, will support a comprehensive care approach through the engagement of community partners and resources to support patients and families with complex health issues that impact directly on health and wellbeing. This work will require the Assistant Manager's presence to dialogue with staff about patient care, and to role model competencies that reflect the full RN scope of practice and skills for leading best practice changes. The Assistant Manager will provide coaching and guidance to staff as they develop and advance competencies for inter-professional learning within their practice scope and will provide clinical leadership to staff to resolve complex patient issues. The Assistant Manager oversees staffing resources to meet daily needs, makes effective and confident decisions about the replacement of sick calls, vacation scheduling and requests, and will provide support and oversight of self-scheduling by working closely with self-scheduling committee.
The Assistant Manager will assist in the management and monitoring of new and existing clinical projects, review with the HSM data and reports pertaining to all CCU/IMCU operations and clinical practices, monitor quality indicators data, processes and patient satisfaction, investigate and manage follow through of patient complaints and adverse events, monitor attendance and initiate follow up as required, provide clinical leadership to staff to resolve complex patient issues, help support the day to day operational expenditures of the care area(s) in a fiscally prudent manner, and coordinate the purchasing of capital equipment and supplies to ensure requirements are met.
About You
We would love to hear from you if you have the following:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing/Bachelor of Nursing required
- Current, or eligible for, registration with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN) required
- Minimum of 3-5 years recent experience in a nursing leadership, education, and/or management role required
- Previous Critical Care nursing experience preferred
- Knowledge and experience with computer based programs including Microsoft Office
- Demonstrated commitment to the principle of patient/family centered care
- Demonstrated communication skills, both oral and written
- Demonstrated conflict resolution skills
- Demonstrated critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills
- Demonstrated abilities related to staff and clinical program development and evaluation

Compensation and Benefits
$40.95 - $54.42 Hourly
