The Opportunity

Children’s Intensive Services (CIS) provides a rehabilitative mental health treatment setting that provides a day treatment and 24/5 treatment service for children aged 12 years and under. The length of stay for the children is approximately 4 months (5 days a week initially, with gradual transition back to home/community). The Youth Care Worker participates as member of an interdisciplinary team, to assist in providing holistic, comprehensive care to meet the needs of children aged 5-12 years who present with serious emotional and behavioural problems. CIS utilizes the Collaborative Problem Solving model and casual staff are expected to have Level 1 CPS competencies. Reporting to the Manager of Children’s Intensive Services, and under the leadership and supervision of regulated health care providers, the Youth Care Worker collaborates with the inter-professional team members and partners to provide quality physical and psychosocial care.  The Youth Care Worker works to provide supervision and guidance regarding mental and physical health, daily living skills, community integration and advocacy for children and their families.  The Youth Care Worker builds constructive supportive relationships; ensuring client confidentiality and professional boundaries.

Hours of Work

Varied shifts, Sunday – Friday, days, evenings & overnight shifts.

Your Qualifications

  • Successful completion of an undergraduate degree in Child and Youth Care Studies or a Diploma from an accredited 2 year program in Child and Youth Care Studies
  • Minimum one (1) year experience in a mental health and addictions with children as adolescents as applicable to the specific care area required; two (2) - three (3) years preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of child and adolescent mental health diagnoses.
  • Demonstrated competency in clinical documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage challenging behaviours in a residential setting.
  • Successful completion of a Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Basic Life Support (BLS) Program within the last 12 months or successful completion of a BLS Renewal Challenge Certificate required.
  • Non Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) certification required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of child and adolescent development.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead evidence based groups.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the IWK’s mission, vision and values and commitment to Family Centred Care.
  •  Demonstrated competency and experience in Collaborative Problem Solving Model required.
  • Demonstrated appropriate judgement in establishing a therapeutic interaction with client population.
  • Competency in other languages is considered an asset.
