The Opportunity
The Registered Nurse is an integral member of an interdisciplinary team who will work in collaboration with geneticists, metabolic dietician, family physicians, and other health professionals to develop and implement a plan of care that is individualized and meaningful to each patient. The nurse is also responsible for the coordination of care which will include arranging investigations and follow up and biochemical monitoring including evaluating lab data, computerized tracing of lab results, tracking blood work and other results of investigation or consultation, phone consultations and reminders to families. The rarity and complexity of these metabolic conditions necessitates a high level of coordination and communication of care, as well as education of families and other professionals involved in the care of these patients.
The Registered Nurse is accountable for the application of current theory and research in the delivery of family centred care consistent with the philosophy, objectives, mission and vision of the IWK Health Centre.
Hours of Work
Four (4) days per week; 8:30am - 4:30pm (Will be determined as per needs of the team)
Your Qualifications
- Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing required (candidates with commensurate experience and education will be considered).
- Registered, or eligible to be registered, with the Nova Scotia Nursing and Midwife Regulator (NSNMR).
- Current successful completion of a Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Basic Life Support Level (BLS) Program within the last 12 months, or successful completion of a BLS Renewal Challenge Certificate, required.
- Three (3) to five (5) years clinical experience in direct patient care is preferred.
- Those with knowledge and experience in the field of genetics; preferred.
- Community nursing experience and strong background in patient education are assets.
- Ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team required.
- Sound understanding of Family Centred Care required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and electronic communications required.
- Demonstrates strong critical thinking skills, including clinical judgment, problem solving skills, organizational skills and strong decision making ability.
- Competency in other languages an asset.
