The Opportunity

The IWK Health Centre (IWK) is an internationally recognized academic health sciences centre located in Halifax, Nova Scotia dedicated to the highest standards of patient and family-centred care, research, and education. The IWK is an integral part of the region’s communities, caring for a population of two million women, children, youth and families across Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick, and providing sub-specialty care to residents of Newfoundland & Labrador. As one of two provincial health authorities in Nova Scotia, the IWK is shaping, cultivating, and stewarding the health agenda for families and has charted an ambitious course to world-class outcomes.

The IWK’s Facilities & Environmental Services Department is responsible for 24-hour/7-days-per-week/365-days-per-year maintenance and operations of all building and clinical infrastructures/systems/equipment required to support the Health Centre, including off-site locations, service areas, clinical areas, parking areas, helideck and properties.

The Power Engineer operates, inspects, maintains, records data and performs minor repairs on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, high and low pressure steam systems, emergency power generation systems, containment lab mechanical systems, medical vacuum/gas systems, and fire suppression systems. The role is also responsible for performing both planned and unplanned start-up and shutdown of systems previously mentioned. The IWK is a Third Class regulated plant as per Department of Labour regulations. As such the physical plant must be continuously supervised by a licensed Power Engineer to ensure compliance with said regulations.

Hours of Work

Monday - Friday and Weekends, 7.5 hour shifts or 11.25 hour shifts (7:00 am-7:00pm/7:00 pm to 7:00 am)

Your Qualifications

  • Minimum grade 12 or GED required.
  • Minimum Interprovincial Fourth-Class Power Engineer License (Includes Second Class Refrigeration License).
  • Three (3) years' experience in a similar position an asset.
  • Ability to work both in a team and independently.
  • Ability to react to emergencies or other changes in work environment and effectively reprioritize tasks.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, process diagrams, blueprints, and technical manuals.
  • Ability to distinguish full colour spectrum.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety procedures.
  • Ability to recognize and appropriately react to potentially hazardous conditions.
  • Ability to safely follow instruction and work processes.
  • Knowledge of building operation systems (Siemens/Johnson Controls).
  • Functional knowledge of auxiliary building software (Megamation, Fireworks, Swisslog).
  • Knowledge of hydronics and an understanding of water treatment.
  • Ability to carry out tasks with a strong emphasis on safe work practices.
  • Ability to identify opportunities and take action to enhance results within the organization without prompt.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Competencies in other languages is an asset.
