The Opportunity
Reporting to the Manager, Prenatal Care Team and Adult Surgery Inpatient Unit, the Operations Manager will provide collaborative leadership in the day-to-day management of identified patient services, physical, financial, and human resources, consistent with the mission, strategic plan, goals and objectives of the IWK Health Centre. The Operations Manager will liaise effectively with the medical, administrative, professional and support staff, to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the Prenatal Special Care and Adult Surgery Inpatient Unit (PSCU/AS), the Perinatal Centre (PNC), Fetal Assessment and Treatment Centre (FATC), Pregnancy and Diabetes Clinic, and Obstetrical Day Unit (ODU), while ensuring high quality patient care services.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: participates and/or leads committees associated with the work of the care team(s) and the Health Centre; monitors and evaluates patient care standards and makes recommendations and/or takes action to affect necessary change; collaborates with the manager to develop processes to ensure appropriate numbers of staff are recruited and retained and coordinates human resources to efficiently and effectively meet care requirement; helps manage day to day operations related to staffing and skill mix, use of time banks; works in collaboration with quality facilitators to ensure quality improvement and risk management activities are coordinated in an efficient and effective manner; mentors team members by supporting, teaching, role modeling and coaching in an effective manner; provides clinical leadership to staff to resolve complex patient issues; participates in the performance evaluation review every two years for all staff; manages performance issues on an ongoing basis in accordance with Health Centre policy; helps support the day to day operational expenditures of the care area(s) in a fiscally prudent manner; coordinates the purchasing of capital equipment, auxiliary amenities, and supplies to ensure requirements are met; participates in the completion of variance reports for review by the Director, applies the collective agreements and non -union agreements and establishes/maintains staffing guidelines that are consistent with operational needs and contractual requirements, participating in the development of the service plan for the care area(s) functions and behaviors. All other duties as directed by the manager/director.
Hours of Work
Monday – Friday (37.5 hours per week). Flexible work hours are required at times.
Your Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in a health-related field required.
- Current, or eligible for, registration/license with appropriate health association/discipline in Nova Scotia required.
- Masters level preparation an asset.
- Minimum three (3) years healthcare related experience.
- Minimum two (2) years’ related leadership experience required.
- Ability to work as part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary team.
- Experience with best practices for patient safety, quality review, reporting events, investigation and follow up of events utilizing the event reporting system, disclosure and patient feedback preferred
- Demonstrated excellent leadership and team-building skills required.
- Demonstrates ability to develop and sustain internal/external partnerships.
- Knowledgeable in the concepts of program-based care and patient/family-centred care required.
- Knowledgeable in the concepts of Family Integrated Care and Trauma Informed Care required.
- Demonstrated ability to coach, develop, and lead high-performing teams with a strong track record of continuous improvement and measurable outcomes.
- Excellent time management, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated excellent communication (written and oral) and organizational skills required.
- Demonstrates high degree of confidentiality and discretion required.
- Demonstrated expert negotiation and conflict resolution skills required.
- Must be proactive, problem solution-focused, analytical and innovative.
- Competency in other languages is an asset.
