The Opportunity
Reporting to the Manager General Pediatric Medicine, the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner will function in an advanced practice role as Clinician, Leader, Advocate, Educator, and Scholar. The Nurse Practitioner's (NP) practice is based on in-depth knowledge of nursing and other sciences with emphasis on health assessment, diagnosis, and management of illness. The focus of the NP's practice will be on providing inpatient care and outpatient services to manage the health and needs of children and adolescents requiring intervention and follow-up. The NP works collaboratively with other health professionals to provide safe, competent, and ethical nursing and inter-professional care. The Nurse Practitioner will work collaboratively with physicians within the Division of Pediatric General Medicine.
The Pediatric Nurse Practitioner will have responsibilities that include:
- Utilizing and demonstrating advanced knowledge and decision-making skills to conduct comprehensive assessments, diagnose, and manage the clinical care of children requiring care.
- Triage consults with the MD, identifying patients for appropriate multidisciplinary team members.
- Phone follow-up and virtual sessions with patients and families.
- In-person/virtual clinics focusing on specific populations, e.g., ADHD, behavior, mental health, obesity, growth, bowel, and bladder follow-up.
- Provides direct inpatient care while working autonomously and in collaboration with members of the healthcare team. Within the legislated scope of practice, the NP may be responsible for admitting patients, assessing and diagnosing, providing direct care, performing procedures, facilitating transfers, and discharging patients.
- Collaboration with medical staff.
- Developing, promoting, and maintaining interdisciplinary collaboration in a team environment.
- Working in partnership with nurses and other disciplines to provide holistic patient/family-centered care and advance the practice of pediatric nursing.
- Leading/Participating in planning clinical, educational, quality-improvement, research, and knowledge-translation initiatives.
- Participating in policy and procedure development related to pediatrics.
- Providing leadership and modeling of behavior related to nursing practice issues.
- Promoting communication among nursing and other health disciplines in the care of the patient and family in the IWK Health Centre and the community.
- Actively pursues continuing education opportunities to remain current with advances in pediatric medicine and clinical best practices.
Hours of Work
Mon - Fri (0800-1600) evening clinics (16:30-20:00) Inpatients 8- and 10-hour shifts, days and weekends.
Your Qualifications
- Successful completion of a graduate degree in nursing with a Nurse Practitioner component and or a recognized equivalent graduate program, pediatric NP, or Family All Ages NP with pediatric focus/clinical placements
- Licensed or eligible for licensure by the Nova Scotia College of Nursing as a Nurse Practitioner.
- Current successful completion of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (BLS) Program within the last 12 months, or successful completion of a BLS Renewal Challenge Certificate, is required.
- Demonstrated clinical competence in Pediatric Medical nursing (minimum two (2) years’ experience) required.
- Experience with ADHD/behavioral challenges and modification /lifestyle management is an asset.
- Demonstrates understanding of evidence-based practice and utilization of research in practice.
- Demonstrates ability to work and practice autonomously.
- Ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
- Demonstrates critical thinking skills, including clinical judgment, and strong decision-making ability.
- Demonstrates strong organizational, communication, and people skills with patients, families, and colleagues.
- Demonstrates organizational, conceptual, and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to constantly changing, unpredictable situations.
- Commitment to patient safety and continuous quality improvement.
- Competencies in other languages are an asset.
