The Opportunity
Quality and Patient Safety portfolio supports IWK Health in the achievement of excellent care experiences for our patients and families and promoting care and service that reflects the IWK’s values and commitments. The IWK Health Centre provides sustainable safe and high-quality health care which is accessible, people-centered, promotes health and wellness and optimizes the health of Maritime Women, Children and Youth. This is accomplished by provision of a variety of inpatient, outpatient and community-based programs and services.
We are seeking a Manager, Quality and Patient Safety to provide leadership and oversight of the operational and administrative activities of the Quality and Patient Safety team. The manager supports the Director, Quality, Patient Safety and Patient Experience in leading the development and implementation of quality improvement and patient safety and plans, goals and objectives to support the delivery of integrated health programs and services. The position will work collaboratively to ensure there are structures, systems and processes in place to enable the IWK to achieve the best outcomes in health care program and service delivery with a focus on quality improvement & patient safety.
The role establishes and maintains positive relationships with key local, provincial and national representatives and health care partners to provide leadership regarding advancing patient safety and improving care for patients and families.
The Manager works collaboratively with leaders and teams to facilitate and support response to safety events, work with teams to design, implement and evaluate quality improvement initiatives, develop education programs on quality and patient safety best practices, & monitor and evaluate the performance of initiatives and make recommendations for ongoing improvements.
The Manager, Quality & Patient Safety is accountable for directing the daily operations of the Quality & Patient Safety Team and management of the office budget.
The Manager, Quality & Patient Safety provides leadership and oversight for Patient Safety Consultants, SIMS Database Coordinator and Surgical Nurse Reviewers (NSQIP program).
Hours of Work
Monday-Friday, 0800-1600 hrs
Your Qualifications
• Undergraduate degree in a health discipline
• Masters Degree in a related health field is required
• Certified Health Executive is an asset
• Minimum five (5) years in a clinical role plus two (2) years related management/leadership experience
• Previous experience in a complex healthcare organization preferred.
• Working knowledge of relevant governance, national and provincial quality and patient safety standards, principles, tools and methods
• Ability to analyze and interpret statistical data and monitor quality and performance indicators and benchmarks
• In-depth knowledge of the health care environment/system
• Superior oral and written communication skills, organizational and presentation skills, presenting in a meaningful manner specific to the target audience; application of word processing, presentation software and incident management software required
• Commitment to promoting a culture that supports quality, patient safety practices and organizational excellence
• Project & change management experience- competency in leading complex change
• Human resource management experience
• Superior organizational skills with demonstrated attention to detail to meet the demanding challenges in a timely fashion
• Ability to deal with multiple complex issues, manage multiple priorities
• Ability to navigate sensitive and stressful situations with empathy and respect
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
