The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Child Safety Link, the Health Promotion Specialist develops, implements and evaluates child and youth injury prevention initiatives. The position focuses on upstream determinants of injury and applies comprehensive, evidence informed approaches and strategies. Specific initiatives/activities may include, but are not limited to, broad based programming, training/education, awareness raising, advocacy, and research. The Health Promotion Specialist works collaboratively with other Child Safety Link and IWK staff, community safety coalitions/organizations and the provincial government. They will support other CSL initiatives, plan/implement sustainable opportunities and provide timely response to media, and public and health professionals’ inquiries.

 

The primary focus of the Health Promotion Specialist will either be the At Home portfolio or the At Play/At School portfolio.  The At Home portfolio focuses on fall prevention and poisoning prevention and will be expanding into other priority areas.    The At Play/At School portfolio focuses on ATV safety, concussion prevention, helmet safety, active transportation and the building of the At School portfolio.

Hours of Work

Monday-Friday, 7.5 hour shifts (some evening and weekend hours will be required); 75 hours bi-weekly.

Your Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate degree in health promotion/education/public health with experience in injury prevention and program development required.
  • Masters' degree in a related field considered an asset
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in the field of health promotion/injury prevention/public health preferred.
  • Strong understanding of principles of community development, health promotion/injury prevention, determinants of health and population health.
  • Demonstrated understanding of cultural competence and the unique needs of diverse communities.
  • Strong facilitation skills; knowledge and application of adult education approaches an asset.
  • Strong understanding of principles of social marketing and behaviour change.
  • Demonstrated experience/ability to work collaboratively with other staff and community organizations in program initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple program initiatives, exceptional project management and organizational skills
  • Proven outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proven strong writing and presentation skills.
  • Previous advocacy and healthy public policy, program development, evaluation/research experience an asset.
  • Previous media experience an asset.
  • Valid Nova Scotia driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle, and appropriate insurance coverage. Travel required, up to 25% of the position.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset.
