The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager of the Neonatal Care Team, the Division Head of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine (or delegate), and the CNN Site Investigator for IWK, the Data System Abstractor/Research Assistant will assist with data collection/management of the national Canadian Neonatal Network (CNN) databases. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Maintain accurate and complete data locally at IWK Health and perform intermittent audits to ensure quality and accuracy of data
  • Assist in data retrieval and preparation of local audits and reports
  • Ensure privacy and confidentially of all processes, including data storage 
  • Participate in departmental meeting or committees, as requested

 

The Canadian Neonatal Network (CNN) and its sister networks including: the Canadian Association of Pediatric Surgeons Database (CAPSNet), Canadian Preterm Birth Network (CPTBN) and Evidenced-based Practice for Improving Quality (EPIQ). These are large national databases that collect data on mothers/birthing persons and high-risk newborn infants from all 31 tertiary neonatal centers across Canada, including IWK Health. Data abstractor responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Screen all infant charts to determine eligibility to CNN, CAPSNet, CPTBN
  • Abstract relevant clinical and administrative data from maternal and neonatal charts 
  • Enter data into the appropriate database
  • Collect and enter data from hospitals in Nova Scotia and PEI
  • Submit data to the national coordinating center in a timely manner and as per the standardized guidelines 
  • Consult with national database manager and collaborate with data abstractors across the network, including annual meetings 

Hours of Work

Monday – Friday; 0800-1600

Your Qualifications

  • Graduate of approved Health Information Management Program or Health Research preferred
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft office (Access, Word, Excel, Outlook) required (willing to complete on-site training with required databases)  
  • Training & experience in coding, abstracting, auditing and conducting queries  is preferred
  • Knowledge of Medical terminology required
  • Knowledge of Meditech preferred
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to work efficiently, independently and within context of health care team
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to multi-task required
  • A combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered
