Position Summary

The IWK Health Centre’s Children’s Health Program is seeking a Child Psychologist to participate in providing Preschool Age Autism Services. The IWK Health Centre Autism Team provides diagnostic, consultation and intervention services for children, youth, adolescents and their families within Nova Scotia Central Region as well as second opinion and tertiary services for children and youth outside beyond the Central Region. Reporting to the managers of Rehabilitation Services within the Children’s Health Program, the Clinical Psychologist will provide assessment and consultation services to children suspected of having Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The IWK Health Centre is a leading pediatric university teaching center in Canada, providing regional, tertiary level health care to the Maritimes. The Discipline of Psychology is strong and vibrant with over 60 psychologists who provide services in both Children’s Health and Mental Health and Addictions Programs. The IWK Pre-doctoral Residency Program in Pediatric and Child-Adolescent Clinical Psychology is CPA accredited. The successful candidate will be expected to actively participate in training residents.

Hours of Work

Monday – Friday, 37.5 hours/week.


• Ph.D/Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from a CPA and/or APA accredited university program required with significant experience in assessment and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
• Completion of a CPA/APA pre-doctoral internship/residency required.
• Registered, or eligible for registration, with the Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology required.
• Two (2) years formal training and recent clinical experience working with young children with neurodevelopmental disabilities, specifically Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) required.
• Demonstrated ability to administer the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised (ADI-R)for the purposes of clinical diagnostic assessment using the DSM-5 required.
• Demonstrated ability to implement interventions for parent/child identified goals, provide parent-child interventions and provide supportive family interventions required.
• Demonstrated ability to provide case management and facilitate interagency support for families in crisis due to impact of severity and chronicity of ASD required.
• Demonstrated ability to provide team-based interprofessional health care required.
• Excellent time management, organization and problem-solving skills required.
• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Family Centred Care required.
• Knowledge of special education policies and procedures in the Maritime region preferred.
• Competencies in other languages considered an asset; French preferred.
