About the Opportunity

Yarmouth Regional Hospital (YRH) is seeking a general internist to join their collegial group which includes a cardiologist, nephrologist and gastroenterologist. Inpatient call is equally shared and include an Intensive Care Unit. Physicians have an opportunity to work as a preceptor to medical students and residents. YRH is a community site for the Core Internal Medicine program at Dalhousie University with approximately 4-5 residents per year. In addition, a fellowship program for the R4 and R5 fellows provides two fellows per year full-time.

 

YRH offers echocardiography, exercise stress testing with nuclear imaging and pharmacologic stress testing, pacemaker follow up, endoscopy (diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy), bronchoscopy, PFTs, sleep studies, peritoneal dialysis, and hemodialysis (acute and chronic). The Intensive Care Unit has its own portable ultrasound machine. There is a Cardiac Rehab Clinic managed by a nurse and physiotherapist in collaboration with Internal Medicine physicians. Traveling internal medicine clinics to small communities in the Western Zone, particularly Digby and Shelburne, provide outreach services. 

 

Originally founded in 1912, YRH has developed into a vast health care complex serving the 60,000 people of Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby Counties. YRH has 124 inpatient beds and provides a range of primary and secondary services through in-patient, outpatient and satellite programs:

Responsibilities

  • provide full scope of practice internist services
  • participate in call shifts
  • provide support to your own site but also to others in the Western Zone if required, which includes day-time coverage and occasional overnight/weekend coverage
  • be responsible to the Zone Department Head for Internal Medicine for their professional responsibilities and quality of practice
  • operate within the Medical Staff Bylaws of Nova Scotia Health Authority
  • participate in teaching both family medicine and internal medicine residents and fellows

Expected Hours

  • full-time
  • on-call requirement for Internal Medicine (1:7)
  • weekly coverage for ICU and Internal Medicine hospitalist during which time physician will provide outpatient care appropriate to their subspecialty
