About This Opportunity

The community of Neil’s Harbour is looking for a full-time family physician to join a three-Physician rural practice, located at Buchanan Memorial Community Health Centre (BMCHC).  There is also opportunity for locum (1 week – 3 months)  and a short-term contract to cover a one-year maternity leave. Situated at the top of the world-famous Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island, this rural medicine opportunity offers a very manageable work-life balance in an outdoor adventure paradise.  
The modern office space at the BMCHC was designed with the input from all disciplines to provide an integrated approach to care and delivery, including inpatient, outpatient, ED, and clinic-based services. Opened in 1999, the 10-bed short-term care facility serves a permanent population of 2,800 from 13 nearby coastal communities (Cape Smokey to Meat Cove). It also contains a community service wing that houses offices for Public Health, Continuing Care, a social worker, Addiction Services, and Palliative Care. Family Physicians may participate in the teaching of medical learners through Dalhousie University. It is equipped with an Accuro Electronic Medical Record and all required hardware. Call and emergency shifts outside the regular schedule are compensated in addition to the LFM.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Deliver comprehensive primary health care services to patients of all ages and stages of health or illness;
  • Work with other providers to provide inpatient care, nursing home care, after-hours access and emergency department coverage;
  • Provide low volume after hours call;
  • Participate in quality improvement and evaluation activities.
