The IWK Health Centre is an internationally recognized and respected academic health sciences centre located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, providing tertiary and primary care for two million women, children, youth and families across the Atlantic region. The IWK is committed to a workplace where our staff, physicians, learners and volunteers reflect the patients, families and communities that we serve.  We seek and encourage applicants who reflect our broad diversity, and we are committed to reducing barriers to employment and career growth.

Position Summary

BIOTIC is a multi-site imaging centre that is embedded in the two leading research and teaching hospitals in Nova Scotia (QEII Health Sciences Centre and the IWK Health Centre). Our multidisciplinary and cross-functional teams, providing expertise in all facets of imaging research and development, collaborate on commercial development projects with industry partners as well as research and development projects with a number of institutions. Our advanced pre-clinical (MRI, PET, SPECT, CT) and clinical (3T MRI, MEG, EEG) imaging equipment are housed in three labs within the IWK and QEII.  The BIOTIC team co-develops medical technologies as well as creates new imaging techniques and methods for diagnosing and monitoring treatment.

BIOTIC is seeking an applicant for a full-time term position as a Postdoctoral Fellow. The successful applicant will be chiefly responsible for the implementation and validation of quantitative MRI methods for applications in body imaging, particularly in accurate staging of pancreatic cancer and monitoring of response to therapy.

This Postdoctoral Fellow will primarily be responsible for

  • Programming of MRI acquisitions on a GE Healthcare platform using specialized software environments including EPIC, Orchestra and KSFoundation
  • Testing and implementation of advanced image reconstruction approaches such as Compressed Sensing to optimize acquisition time and data quality
  • Designing and performing validation experiments in phantoms and in volunteers
  • Preparation of research ethics submissions, conference presentations, scientific manuscripts and grant applications related to this work.

Depending on experience, the Postdoctoral Fellow may pursue independent research which falls under BIOTIC’s mandate of clinical and commercial translation of imaging technology.

Hours of Work

37.5 hours/week, Monday to Friday.  Flexible schedule, though evenings/weekends may be required occasionally depending on the nature of ongoing projects and deadlines.

  • PhD degree in physics, medical physics, biomedical engineering or related field
  • Experience in magnetic resonance imaging, with preference for clinical imaging experience and/or experience with the GE environment.
  • Proficiency in programming with C or other scientific programming languages such as Matlab or Python; previous MR pulse sequence programming experience (in any language/environment) is a strong asset.
  • Experience in signal processing, image reconstruction and/or data analysis
  • General research experience including scientific communications skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to work independently with good problem solving skills and attention to detail
