The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, IWK Emergency Care, Children’s Health Program, the IWK Trauma Care Program provides expert, coordinated, family centred care to children and families whose lives have been altered by traumatic injury. The Trauma Resource Nurse works with the interprofessional team, including pre-hospital, emergency, critical, acute and rehabilitation, to facilitate the delivery of consistently high-quality care for the patient/family.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
•    Working closely with the Trauma Care Coordinator and Trauma Program Medical Director, the Trauma Resource Nurse provides learning and research opportunities for students, staff and volunteers, patients and families, key partners, and our community. 
•    Acts as a unit-specific resource on the care of trauma patients. 
•    Provides leadership, resources, guidance, and support in the provision of trauma care to staff. 
•    Maintains an overall awareness and knowledge of policies and procedures as they relate to the care of the pediatric trauma patient. 
•    Contributes to the development of a comprehensive trauma care program within IWK Health and the community through participation and leadership in care team, program, organizational, and professional activities/committees.
•    Provides leadership for the advancement of clinical practice in pediatric trauma care at an institutional, regional, and national level. 
•    Participates in unit, care team, program, and Health Centre quality improvement and risk management activities to ensure the delivery of efficient and effective trauma care and the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment.
•    Demonstrates practice that is evidence based, organized according to priority, and that is consistent with professional, legal, and ethical requirements of professional discipline and of the IWK Health Centre.
 

Hours of Work

Monday to Friday, flexibility required 

Your Qualifications

•    Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing Program. Registered, or eligible to be registered with the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia (CRNNS) required.
•    Minimum of three (3) years recent experience related to the care of trauma patients required.
•    Current Pediatric Emergency Department Nursing experience required. 
•    Certification in Emergency Nursing or Critical Care Nursing or equivalent professional designation/certification preferred.
•    Simulation leader course/simulation experience an asset. 
•    Demonstrated experience with educational initiatives/adult learning. 
•    Trauma Nursing Care Course an asset.
•    Experience and/or demonstrated strong interest in research.
•    Demonstrated Understanding of NS Trauma systems and related standards of care.
•    Competency in other languages considered an asset, French preferred.
•    Demonstrated ability and initiative to work independently.
•    Experience/Knowledgeable in the areas of Emergency Preparedness/Code Orange planning preferred.
